Mama's Mexican Kitchen
2234 Second Ave.
Seattle, WA 98121
206-728-6262
Before the 1974 opening of Mama's Mexican Kitchen in downtown Seattle's bohemian Belltown barrio, what passed for Mexican cuisine was seriously lacking. Mama's introduced tacos, burritos, and enchiladas stuffed with shredded beef, properly egg-batter-dipped chili rellenos, stuffed peppers, and crispy, crunchy, guacamole-laden taquitos! Huge portions and extremely reasonable prices continue today, as does Mama's decor. Wildly colored walls and kitschy posters and photographs flatter the multiroomed restaurant. The staff is sharp, speedy, and quick with a quip. If Seattle's Mexican culinary revolution began anywhere, it began at Mama's.
